The Panzer I, though outdated as a gun tank by WWII's start due to its light armor and armament, saw its chassis repurposed into various roles, including a self-propelled howitzer. The s.IG.33 (Sf) auf Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.B, mounting a 150mm s.IG.33 infantry gun, was one such conversion. However, its tall, boxy superstructure overstressed the Panzer I's chassis, and its thin armor and lack of spare ammunition space led to its limited success. Only 38 were converted in 1940, serving in the Battle of France and beyond, with the gun later mounted on alternative chassis.
